Caithness Kayak Club Trophies
CKC awards individual trophies and a team trophy for club competitive events, e.g. pool challenges, sprint racing, pool polo. There are junior and senior boy’s trophies, a girl’s trophy, a ladies trophy and a team shield.
In 2011 the club introduced its Grey Coast Touring trophy for the greatest annual distance paddled on the east coast, between Helmsdale and Wick. |

The trophy consists of a chunk of quartz from the Scaraben Ridge mounted on a wooden base. The Scarabens are the three local mountains looking down on the rugged cliffs of the east coast. The term “Grey Coast” comes from the local author, Neil Gunn, whose book of that name is set on this coast. The trophy is awarded annually each December.
The 2011 winner of the Grey Coast Trophy is Fiona Watson.
The club is also introducing commemorative medals for member’s first paddles to Stroma, the “Stroma medal;” or to Orkney, including Swona or the Skerries, , the “Pentland Firth” medal. None was awarded in 2011, but the prototype goes to Harald Ramsoy for the memorable club trip to Stroma in 2008, which was paddled in a total fog bank that descended when the group was on the water. The fog was so thick that no-one saw the lighthouse on the Swilkie Point that day, all navigation being carried out by compass, GPS and the feel of the water.
